About National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides an opportunity to the student youth of 11th & 12th Class of schools at +2 Board level and student youth of Technical Institutions, Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various Government-led community service activities & programmes. The primary objective of developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. ‘Education through Service’ is the purpose of the NSS. NSS was launched in 1969 in 37 Universities involving about 40,000 volunteers, which has now spread over 657 Universities and 51 +2 Councils/Directorates, covering 20,669 Colleges/ Technical Institutions and 11,988 senior secondary schools. Since its inception, over 7.4 crore students have benefited from NSS.

The NSS Badge Proud to Serve the Nation:

 

  • All the youth volunteers who opt to serve the nation through the NSS led community service wear the NSS badge with pride and a sense of responsibility towards helping the needy.
  • The Konark wheel in the NSS badge, having 8 bars, signifies the 24 hours of the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock, i.e. for 24 hours.
  • Red colour in the badge signifies energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers.
  • The Blue colour signifies the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of mankind.

Benefits of Being a NSS Volunteer:

A NSS volunteer who takes part in the community service programme would either be a college-level or a senior secondary-level student. Being an active member, these student volunteers would have the exposure and experience to be the following:

  • an accomplished social leader
  • an efficient administrator
  • a person who understands human nature

YEAR 2022 - 23   -    N.S.S. UNIT No. SF 28 (Self Financing Unit)

In order to expand the social commitment, the Kerala government has decided to start NSS units in Teacher Training Colleges in Kerala. Following the government's proposal, the University of Calicut has been sanctioned to start NSS units in Teacher Training Colleges under this University. In 2022, Mother Teresa College of Teacher Education was allotted one of these units. The first units were SF units. SF 28 was the unit number. The maximum number of volunteers in the unit is fifty.

Mrs. Shyni N- Asst. Professor in Social Science has been appointed as the Programme Officer.

 

 

 

REPORT OF THE REGULAR NSS ACTIVITIES 2022-23

 

  • 8 March 2022 : International Women’s Day   

The purpose of celebrating Women’s Day is to raise awareness about the status and dignity of women among the students. The NSS volunteers conducted a flash mob. The flash mob aims to spread a message to the community about the violence and suppression against women. 30 girls have participated in the flash mob. The women's cell and NSS unit organised an interactive session, ‘Glowing spark. The chief guest was Dr. Ramya, Medical Officer, Mukkam Govt. Hospital and Assistant Surgeon. The Principal Dr. Bindu T.V  gave the presidential address. The theme of the women’s day celebration was ‘Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow. Dr Ramya discussed some of the common problems shown in most girls and their remedial action.

The NSS unit of the college has conducted an interactive session to break the bias through Google Meet. The chief guest of the program was Mrs Sukanya P, Teacher of Ramakrishna Mission HSS Kozhikode, Dancer, Vice Chairperson of ‘Sraavanika Amalgamation of Arts. She discussed her life experience and showed how to break the bias and get into the highest position in society. The programme ended at 7.30 sharp by showing a yoga presentation by the second year students Riya Johnson and Nisanth Kumar (Inter-university yoga champions).

  • 28 May 2022: Menstrual Hygiene Day

The NSS unit conducted a class in accordance with the celebration of Menstrual Hygiene Day. The chief guest for this programme is Ms Subisha E. She is a volunteer of the NSS unit of Farook Training College. She handled the topic very easily and conveyed the message of the importance of menstruation and hygiene.

  • 5 June 2022 : World Environment Day

The NSS unit celebrated World Environment Day. “Only One Earth” is the campaign slogan, with the focus on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”. As a part of celebrating World Environment Day 2022, being observed as the year of environmental restoration, the NSS unit launched a project named “Nurture the Nature Campaign”. The Chief Guest of the programme was Mr K V Biju, Forest Range Officer, and he inaugurated the programme with planted a tree. We organized a awareness programme related to World Environmental Day from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm. The resource person of the programme was PTA President Sri K Karunakaran, Rtd. Asst Excise Sub Inspector, dealt awareness class about the importance of World Environmental Day.

  • 7 June 2022:World Food Safety Day

The NSS volunteers visited Kappad ‘Kaniv Snehatheeram’. NSS programme officer Mrs Shyni led the programme. As a part of the food safety day celebration, around 50 students were given ‘pothichor’, which they made from their homes. And they spent time with the inmates. After this lunchtime, the artistic performance was done by the NSS volunteers.

  • 26 June 2022: kayyoppu

The NSS volunteers arranged a send-off programme kayyoppu’. As a part of this programme, the NSS volunteers presented a documentary presentation about their memories in the college. 

  • 5 July 2022: Basheer Day

The NSS volunteers conducted a Basheer quiz on Basheer day and conducted different artistic programmes of voulanteers.

  • 11 July 2022: World Population Day

As a part of this World Population Day celebration, the NSS volunteer Chandana S Mohan presented a seminar related to the causes of the increasing population in our country. As a part of this programme, the NSS volunteers organised a poster-making competition. Each department presented posters related to population growth.

  • 12 July 2022: Malala Day

NSS volunteers celebrated Malala Day. As a part of this programme, they organised a signature campaign.

  • 25 July 2022: Moon Day

Moon Day program titled’Anthivinnil Ambilikala’ was celebrated with a variety of programs. A quiz program (Chandrettan Evdaya) was conducted, and a role play (Maanathe Vellitheril) was acted out. A chart exhibition was done on the major updates of ISRO, satellites –Chandrayanam.

  • 26 July 2022: Blood Donation

Blood was donated by 10 NSS volunteers. Required tests were done, and their certificates were distributed.
